Dainichi Harbor, the Coffee Shop at the Foot of the Bridge

Artistic Sophistication in a Mid-century Retro Setting;
A Different Proprietor Each Day

Nestled at the foot of Maruyama Bridge, Dainichi Harbor is run on a shared-shop system where a different proprietor runs the café each day. From the corrugated metal roofing to the glass doors and windows with period-correct joinery, it is a time capsule of Showa-era charm.
The interior is a boldly individual but curiously relaxing affair that blends a variety of elements, including a plain wood counter lined with chairs straight out of yesteryear’s izakaya, and classic leather sofas set by the walls and windows. Because Dainichi Harbor is run by a different person each day, everything from the menu to the books on the shelves changes from day to day. Learning about different proprietors’ tastes and preferences is just one more enjoyable aspect of this one-of-a-kind establishment.
But one thing remains constant regardless of who’s in charge: the famous “soul drink” of the Nagata neighborhood—they call it simply “apple.” That’s a bit of a misnomer, because it’s actually mandarin-infused water. Whatever it’s called, a refreshing drink of “apple” is a soothing tonic after a hike!
