In 2006, Mitsutaka Uchikoshi went missing after a day sharing food and stories with a group of friends near the peak of Japan's Mount Rokkō.

He chose to hike down one of the mountain paths alone on his way back home, but ended up losing his footing, hitting his head and breaking his pelvis. Unable to move or call for help, he lay wounded on the side of the mountain. At night the autumn cold, dropping as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit, crept into his bones. He passed out.

After 24 days, he was found by a passing climber and transported to Kobe City Medical Center General Hospital. He was extremely hypothermic and cold to the touch. Many of his organs were failing. According to news reports at the time, Uchikoshi's doctors reasoned he had fallen into a state "similar to hibernation," just like a groundhog might.

What really happened to Mitsutaka Uchikoshi on that mountain in 2006? CNET Science Editor Jackson Ryan spent years trying to track down Uchikoshi, the doctors that treated him back to health, scientists that are using extreme cold to induce a state of suspended animation in trauma patients, and neuroscientists who are unraveling the chemical mysteries inside the brain to activate hibernation-like states in other mammals.

rokko_garden_terrace was awash in autumn colours when our writer kittycarnage visited. Enjoy the quirky outdoor art installations and the crisp fall weather. Stop for tea at #tenrancafe, their cakes are amazing!

Mt. Rokko can be accessed via the Hankyu Kobe Line. Stop at Rokko Station and take a ten minute bus ride on bus 16 to the base station of the Rokko Cablecar.

11月11日（土）「ハイキングと文化交流」企画として、初めての試みとして、参加者の皆さんと留学生とで摩耶山にハイキングに行きました。
前日の大雨からすっきりと晴れた、澄んだ空気の中、皆で掬星台を目指しました。
「ここまで来た！」と休憩のたびに、眼下の神戸の街並みや緑を楽しみ、参加者同士で色々な話をしながら登ることができました。たくさんの階段もあって大変でしたが、掬星台から美しい神戸の街のパノラマの景色を見て、
登山の疲れもふっとびました。

広場では、神戸・菅原奨学金の奨学生が母国の自然や文化について話し、遠い国から来て頑張っている留学生の話に耳を傾けました。

皆で一緒に達成感を味わうことができた経験となり、神戸にはこんなに身近に美しい自然があることも再発見できました。

昨日の雨が止み#サンカヨウはどうかな…と様子を見てみるとついに透明な姿が見られました✨ガラス細工のようで綺麗ですね🥰
