The record-high severe heat wave this August has finally let up and as the weather reaches the middle to the end of September, it feels like the autumn season is gradually setting in downtown Kobe. And here on Mt. Rokko (alt.931m), you can obviously sense a hint of autumn along with cool weather under the beautiful clear sky. The season of the most artistic, international, and widespread events in the Mt. Rokko area, “Rokko Meets Art” has started and is in full swing.
Rokko Meets Art is a modern art exhibition annually held at a variety of venues across the Mt. Rokko area and this year marks the eleventh year of the event. It would be a great opportunity to enjoy creative artworks from Japan and overseas as well as to experience Mr. Rokko’s marvelous nature and the passing of the seasons with your five senses.
Rokko Meets Art 2020
Event period: September 12th (Sat.) to November 23rd (Mon. national holiday)
(*Closed on September 17th and 24th)
Opening hours: 10:00-17:00
*Final admission time differs depending on the venue.
*Some exhibits may be seen after 17:00 depending on the venue.
Venue and Artworks: 12 locations on the mountain top and a couple of satellite areas (over 40 artworks).
Ticket: Adult (middle-school and older)2,500 yen (online 2,300 yen), Child (4-year-old to elementary school) 1,000 yen (online 950 yen)

【Rokko Cable Car】

This is the first artwork that you will see if you visit Mt. Rokko via the Rokko Cable Car. (Rokko Cable Shita Station)

After a 10-minute cable-car ride, you will arrive at the Rokko Sanjo Station. Inside the station building, multiple artworks created by 7 artists from the Galarie Herold (Bremen, Germany) are displayed.

【Tenran Observatory】

Tenran Observatory is located adjacent to Rokko Sanjo Station and this artwork is displayed right in front of a spectacular wide view of the Kobe and Osaka area.
【Rokkosan Country House】
Taking the Rokko Sanjo Bus at Rokko Sanjo Station will get you to the Rokkosan Country House within 10 minutes. Relish the fresh breeze in a super relaxing, wide-open field with abundant nature and appreciate 4 wonderful artworks displayed both in and outdoors.

【Rokko Shidare Observatory】
After about a 10-minute walk from the Rokkosan Country House, a very unique and appealing structure building that towers on the hill will appear before your very eyes. This is Rokko Shidare Observatory. The panoramic view from the observatory is stunning and will definitely captivate your heart.

On top of that, many more artworks at different locations such as the Chapel of the Wind designed by a world-renowned architect, Tadao Ando, the Memorial Monument(Mt. Rokko Visitor Center), and the Rokko Garden Terrace (daytime and night time) are awaiting your visit .
In addition to the Mt. Rokko area, you can find 6 artworks (by 3 artists) at the Arima Onsen hot spring area and enjoy Mr. Kohei Maeda’s artwork at JR Shin-Kobe Station as the satellite venues. He was awarded the Kobe mayor’s prize in 2019.
