Route No.3
Origin and History of the name of Mt. Hachibuse・Mt. Hatafuri・Mt. Tekkai
As Suma was a strategic point between the mountains and the sea connecting the western part of Japan and the Kinai region, in the Nara period, Suma no seki was established, and in the Heian period, it became a place of retreat for aristocrats as seen in The Tale of Genji. Then in the late Heian period, the famous Genpei Battle (Ichinotani no Saka Otoshi) took place there.
Mt. Hatafuri is a historical location overlooking the city of Kobe to the east and the Banshu Plain west of Akashi to the west, where flags were once waved to signal the market prices of rice in the Taisho and early Showa periods.
