Route No.4
Origin and History of the name of Ice Road
Ice Road is an ancient road along the valley line that connects from the middle of the Rokko driveway to Maegatsuji. Ice blocks were loaded onto a traditional Japanese wooden wheeled cart and were delivered from the mountaintop through this road at night. This is the origin story of the name Ice Road. In the peak period (around the beginning of the Meiji era), a large number of ice blocks were produced on the ponds which included the Mikuni pond and the Tuge pond. Natural ice blocks from the Rokko mountaintop had been very pricey up until electric freezers and refrigerators emerged.
