Origin and History of the name of Mt. Ikari・Mt. Shisho
The ikari (anchor) mark originated in 1903 when a pine tree was planted in the shape of an anchor in commemoration of the Emperor Meiji's naval review visit to Kobe. In 1981, Mt. Ikari was permanently decorated with electric lights to commemorate the Kobe Port Island Exposition, and wind power and solar power were introduced as power sources.
The shisho (city emblem) mark originated in 1907, when a pine tree was planted in the shape of the city emblem to commemorate the construction of the Port of Kobe. In 1933, it was temporarily decorated with electric lights to commemorate the first Port Festival, and in 1967, it was permanently decorated to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Port of Kobe.
The illuminated Mt. Shisho at the southern foot of Kobe in the shape of the city emblem and the anchor-shaped illuminated Mt. Ikari to the west of it are both famous landmarks of Kobe.
