Foot of the Mountains (Central)

A course for visiting temples and shrines along the mountainside and enjoying the scenery. Starting from JR Kobe Dentetsu Nagata Station, the route passes by temples, shrines, and scenic viewpoints along the mountainside as you make your way towards Ishiibashi Station.
As the course involves walking along the mountainside, much of it is uphill and downhill, but you'll encounter many charming temples and shrines.

Himuro Shrine, known as home to the goddess of love, and Gion Shrine are associated with the gods who play active roles in Japanese mythology. Yumeno Daishi Fukuju-in Temple, which enshrines stone Buddhas discovered during the Minato River renovation, is located in a tranquil mountain setting, with many stone Buddhas enshrined in the precincts.

Spot 1

Hiyodori Observation Park

From the observation deck, you can overlook the area from Ashiya City to Suma and enjoy views of the Seto Inland Sea. The hiking course features an arbor with excellent views overlooking the Akashi Strait. The mountain trails are well-maintained and include stairs. Surrounded by nature, you can leisurely hike up to the observation deck while enjoying the scenery and listening to the chirping of birds.

Yumeno Daishi Fukuju-in Temple

From the busy roads, you can reach the serene Yumeno Daishi Fukuju-in Temple in 20 minutes. This hidden temple nestled in the mountains features a tiled-roof resting area, a splendid bell tower with red pillars, a modest five-story pagoda, and a statue of Kobo Daishi, symbolizing the sect. The temple grounds also contain numerous memorial towers.

Himuro Shrine

Himuro Shrine, known as home to the goddess of love, enshrines Okuninushi, renowned for matchmaking, and Ichikishima-hime-no-Mikoto.
In addition to matchmaking, it offers various blessings such as warding off misfortune, prosperity in business, success in exams, and recovery from illness. It is said that wishes are granted by placing "love letters" containing wishes into the "Love Post" box in front of the main hall, attracting visitors from all over the country.

Karasuhara Reservoir

With the opening of Kobe Port and the increase in population, the need for water became evident, especially after the outbreak of cholera, prompting the construction of modern water supply systems to secure drinking water. Alongside the Minatogawa Tunnel, this was one of the three major civil engineering projects in Kobe during the Meiji era. Boasting rich natural surroundings throughout the seasons, it is recommended to enjoy a hike all the way around the reservoir.

Chidori-cho Pass

From the path circling around the water and forest of the Karasuhara Reservoir to the direction of Chidorigataki Falls lies Chidori-cho.
Along the path that was created, you can see quaint stone Buddhas and scenic views. The space surrounded by the stones of this pass is mystical.
Pass through the retro atmosphere of Chidori-cho as you head towards the next shrine.

・Oyamakui Shrine is located in the Sanno-cho area northeast of Ishii Bridge, upstream of the Ishii River.


・The enshrined Oyamakui deity rules over mountains and is called "Sanno-san," the name behind Sanno-cho.

Gion Shrine

Located on the mountainside of Mt. Gion, north of Okurayama Park along the Arima Kaido road, with 88 steep stone steps leading up to the precincts.
The enshrined deities of Gion Shrine are Susano-no-Mikoto and Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto. The shrine is believed to bring blessings such as the prevention of epidemics, protection from water disasters, and warding off misfortune.

・There is a community farm utilizing a corner of Hirano Observation Park where visitors to the park can freely enjoy harvesting.

・A historic hot spring with a history of 134 years.


・It is said that Taira no Kiyomori also bathed in this hot spring. Visitors can enjoy baths with flowing natural spring water.

NATURE STUDIO

・NATURE STUDIO, established in 2022, is located on the site of the former Minatoyama Elementary School, which closed in 2015.


・It is a place where you can experience nature up close. In the renovated gymnasium, now a food hall, you can enjoy meals.


・The former schoolyard has been turned into a pesticide-free edible garden.
